This is one of the best Jeff Tweedy sets I've ever encountered. Jeff Tweedy puts on a prime set and then is joined by Wilco for an 11 song, largely acoustic, set. The mix on this soundboard recording is really fantastic, a real pleasure to listen to.

PREMO set by Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Crisp sound, great set list, witty banter (Jeff is known for being particularly good at the latter) - it's got it all. My favorite track on this (streaming below) is a tune he wrote for Mavis Staples called "You Are Not Alone" - from the disc of the same title that he produced.

Speaking of things Jeff Tweedy produced - he just did a record for Minnesota based band Low titled The Invisible Way - which I think is their best work to date so check that out. It took me a few spins before it clicked, don't give up on it too quickly.

In sort of unrelated news I recently read that Jeff Tweedy has a net worth of 9 million bones. That blew me away, so, if you're lookin' for some Google searches later go ahead and plug that in.

What we have here is something that was posted more than 3 years ago and was never uploaded to The Treasury and given the last day or so, I found it appropriate to get out there again.

My main man Jeff out on the East coast was kind enough to send over some great Jeff Tweedy solo shows and after burning through those sets I started thinking about non-Wilco Jeff Tweedy and inevitably had to toss on some Uncle Tupelo, one of the original alt-country bands. Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy both cutting their songwriting chops singing about whiskey, failed love and...well...that's about it. But it was fantastic and set the scene for two of the best songwriters of a generation.

Jay Farrar went on to form Son Volt, New Multitudes (with our very own Mr. Jim James) and perform as a solo musician. Jeff Tweedy, well, we all know how that turned out. Wilco, Volkswagen commercials, the works really.

These are some of the earliest known demos of their work, something sent out on cassette tapes to radio stations and record label exec's.

But before either of them were alt-country heroes they were a couple of kids from Belleville, IL trying to make sense of the world around them. Enjoy this music, it has a special place in history.
